If you’re looking for a good lightweight word processor, but Microsoft Word is way beyond your budget, try AbiWord. AbiWord is a free open source word processor. There are so many free software programs available these days. I really don’t understand why some people continue to spend big bucks for big name computer software programs when you can get free programs that work just as well or even better.

AbiWord is a nice word processor.
AbiWord is a nice word processor.

Other word processors were too heavy. Abiword is just right.

I used to use Open Office to do all of my word processing task. It’s a free, open source software suite similar to Microsoft Works, Word, Excel, Access, Power point, etc. I rarely used it though, because it is a huge program. It uses a ton of memory and it’s kinda chunky. When I used it, it was like pulling out a gigantic food processor to chop up a few carrots when a sharp knife would do the job quicker and more efficiently. Before joining HubPages, I would normally use WordPad for any small word processing jobs that I needed done. However, WordPad only has minimal features. It doesn’t even have a spell checker. Since I started writing Hubs I’d been wanting a word processor that has a word count. WordPad doesn’t have one. Open Office didn’t either. Although, recently I heard that a new version now has a word counter on it.

Found: A word processing program that has word count.

I wanted word processing software with a word count on it. I knew there had to be a free software program out there somewhere. I’m what some people would consider a freeware geek. I love downloading and trying out free computer software programs. So, I went to search for a free word processing program on one of my favorite software download web sites. After doing a few searches, I finally found a free word processor that has a word count. I found AbiWord. It is completely free to download and keep. It looks like Microsoft Word. It has many good features on top of having the word counter. It’s a small lightweight word processor that doesn’t use too much memory. It’s light and powerful. It has mail merge, and other features that Open Office doesn’t have.

AbiWord is compatible on these different computer systems.

AbiWord is easy to download. It is compatible with Windows, Linux, Mac OS, QNX, and BeOS. You can download AbiWord from one of the many software download web sites like download.cnet.com or you can go directly to AbiWord’s web site at www.abisource.com. On the AbiWord web site you can find out about all of the features, see screenshots, and download additional plug ins. AbiWord has excellent reviews and awards from many different sources. They have received numerous accolades from many different groups ranging from PC World to Daily News to MSNBC.

AbiWord rocks!
AbiWord rocks!

I give AbiWord two thumbs up!

The only thing I don’t like about AbiWord is it’s spell checker. Sometimes it flags words that are spelled correctly. I consider that a small issue. Other spell checkers do that too. I don’t think there are any perfect spell checkers out there anyway. So, as long as I have my word counter, I’m happy.
